The service in context
O2 traces its UK brand to the former BT Cellnet business and is now part of Virgin Media O2. Its mobile support separates Pay Monthly and Pay As You Go journeys.
Ask which brand actually supplies your network service, what contract you signed and who handles complaints.
SIM-only and phone plans
O2 may offer a SIM-only service and, where available, a handset-plus-airtime route. Compare the total commitment, introductory price and the end-of-term price rather than just one monthly figure.
If the phone is financed separately, an airtime cancellation may not settle the device balance.
Upgrades and contract timing
Before changing a plan or phone, open the current agreement and latest bill. Identify the minimum term, any remaining device payments and an offer’s new term.
Save the written upgrade summary and check how returns and trade-in grading work.
eSIM and activation
Use an eSIM-capable unlocked device and follow O2’s official activation instructions. Keep a working Wi-Fi connection and do not delete the old profile until the new line works.
If a replacement fails, contact the provider through its authenticated account route; do not share QR codes.
PAYG, monthly and renewals
Big Bundles and Rolling Plans have different renewal mechanics.
Check whether the product is a top-up balance, auto-renew pack, rolling monthly plan or minimum-term contract.
Coverage and postcode
Use the official coverage checker for the full postcode. Compare indoor/outdoor predictions and 4G/5G availability; inspect live status when an area suddenly fails.
A map prediction cannot certify signal inside your specific room or on your handset.
Data and unlimited plans
Read the actual allowance, any speed tier and out-of-bundle process. Unlimited UK data may have separate roaming fair-use conditions.
If tethering matters, check the acceptable-use and device rules.
Roaming and international calls
Review O2 Travel and destination charges against your particular tariff.
A UK-to-overseas call and using your phone while overseas are different charge categories.
Broadband and connected devices
O2 also describes mobile broadband devices; Virgin Media home broadband is a separate service in the same group.
Compare fixed broadband, a mobile hub and a data-only SIM against the right address and usage.
App and account
The relevant account route is My O2. Use it to inspect usage, bills, settings or help where supported.
The app is operated by the provider, not by rivomeg.
When service glitches
Check the status page, restart the handset, test another location and confirm SIM/eSIM selection and data settings.
If the issue persists, record time, postcode and symptoms, then raise it with the provider.
